Compared with the participants who reported working 40 or fewer hours a week, those who worked more than 55 hours a week had lower scores on the vocabulary tests at the start and the follow-up assessments. They also showed a larger decline in fluid intelligence from the first set of tests to the second. These connections persisted even after the investigators accounted for education, occupation, disease, stress, sleep, and other factors that might influence cognitive decline. The results were published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
